Sacked Tory MP Nahdim Zahawi condemns UK press in letter to PM Rishi Sunak

‘’I am concerned, however, of the conduct from some of the fourth estate in the recent weeks” – MP Nahdim Zahawi

Nahdim Zahawi has condemned the actions of the press following his sack as the Tory Party Chairman.

‘’ I am concerned, however, of the conduct from some of the fourth estate in recent weeks. In a week when a Member of Parliament was physically assaulted, I fail to see how one headline on this issue ‘’The Noose Tightens” reflects legitimate scrutiny of public officials.’’ Nahdim Zahawi says in a letter to prime minister Rishi Sunak.

This is coming after Zahawi was sacked by PM Sunak for a breach of the ministerial code by failing to disclose information about an HRMC investigation and the outcome of his tax affairs. An action which Sir Laurie Magnus, Independent advisor on ministers’ interest condemned in his letter to Rishi Sunak after an investigation was carried out.

‘’I consider that Mr. Zahawi, in holding the high privilege of being a Minister of the crown has shown insufficient regard for the General Principles of the Ministerial Code and the requirements, under the seven Principles of Public Life, to be honest, open and an exemplary leader through his own behaviour.’’

Zahawi who came into the country as a Kurdish-born Iraqi was commended by the Prime Minister in his letters for his achievements in office and encouraged to support the PM from the back benches. However, he had to be let go because of Sunak’s pledge to lead an integrity and accountable government.

MP Zahawi had previously made public statements describing news circulating that the HRMC was looking into him as “unfair and clearly smears’’.

He has assured PM Sunak of his support for him from the backbenches in his letter.

“You can be assured of my support from the backbenches in the coming years. Your five priorities are the right priorities and I will do whatever I can to help you deliver them.’’ Nahdim wrote.

Nahdim Zahawi is still the Member of Parliament for Stratford on Avon.
